Q: How did you get started in the industry?
I promise you that I had no idea I would be on my way to 10 years in the construction industry when I applied, was accepted and subsequently graduated, top of my class, from Project JumpStart back in 2010.
Q: What challenges did you have to overcome?
My biggest challenge when entering the industry was traveling to and from work. With stiff fees on a suspended license and no reliable transportation the opportunity of a lifetime was about to slip right from my hands. However, that was not going to stop me. I took care of all those obstacles within three months’ time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
I love making blueprints come to life. The fact that my job and daily tasks are ever changing from day to day, that’s the part that keeps me interested and things at work interesting.
Q: How has a career in construction impacted your life?
My career in construction has actually changed my chances of living my life more abundantly. Obviously, the 20K plus salary jump allowed me to become independent and move out on my own. It’s also allowed me to help my family, start my own family and give back to the community by teaching as an instructor for Project Jumpstart.
Q: What advice do you have for others about the construction industry?
The construction industry is demanding. If you aren’t fully committed to your craft or trade it won’t work out. We are literally building the world around us, so it’s serious business. If you’re willing to work smart, diligently and safely, there’s a place for you to be successful in the industry and they will keep you working!
